Everything you need to know about Road Safety WeekNo Date Posted

For many years Road Safety Week has been the UK's flagship road safety event, and this year is no exception.

Organised by the charitable organisation Brake, this year's Road Safety Week will take place from November 23-29, 2015, and will focus on the theme of drive less, live more.

As Brake explain on the official Road Safety Week website: "At Brake, we think road safety isn't just about driving safely and legally or using the green cross code (although they're important). It's about making our streets safe and pleasant for everyone to use freely, and it's about us all doing what we can to protect ourselves, people around us and the planet we depend on. A big part of that is driving less, as little as possible, or not at all if you can: it can make a huge difference to road safety and your health, wallet, community, and the planet...That's why this Road Safety Week, we're encouraging everyone to consider how they use roads, and if they can ditch some driving, and instead walk, cycle or use public transport as much as possible. Work out how much money you'll save, calories you'll burn, and pollution you won't create, and build it into your routine."

Consequently, regardless of whether you're a motorist, cyclist or pedestrian, by supporting this year's Road Safety Week you can improve the general health and well-being of your local community, offset your carbon footprint and make your local roads a safer place for all who use them.

The history of Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week is the creation of the charitable organisation Brake, which was formed in 1995 by former transport journalist Mary Williams OBE. Since their creation, Brake has remained committed to providing support for the victims of road traffic accidents and preventing the number of road traffic deaths and injuries that occur in Britain every year. By uniting employers, local authorities and educational institutions, Brake continue to organise annual Road Safety Week events that increase national awareness towards road safety initiatives. In fact, over the past 20 years, Road Safety Week has raised substantial funds for dedicated road safety initiatives on both a local and national level.

How you can get involved

There are many different ways in which volunteers, employers, community leaders, local authorities, schools and colleges can get involved with Road Safety Week and raise awareness towards Brake's drive less, live more campaign objectives.
